History

Sigurd Sandvik founded the company that was to become Sandviks AS after his first child was born. This was in 1965, and at a time when very little useful or easily-understood information was available to new parents.

While there were translated books from the USA and other countries, most of these were written as technical literature and were not very suitable for Norwegian conditions. Based on his own needs, Sandvik believed that it must be possible to publish a book which could gather together important Norwegian expertise and answer the questions most people have about their newborn children. And to ensure that everybody had access to this information, it had to be free of charge. The book was entitled “Spebarnsboken” (The Baby Book) and commencing that year it was distributed to all new mothers at most hospitals in Norway.

Spebarnsboken has since become one of the most trusted and important sources of information for new parents in Norway. It has been continuously updated to reflect the very latest research and recommendations. For example, from a very early stage Spebarnsboken recommended exclusive breast feeding, even at a time when many believed that breast milk substitute was just as good for the child as mother’s milk. The book has also been available free of charge all these years because company adver-tisements pay the cost of printing and publishing. The 2008 edition of Spebarnsboken was the 42nd in the series.
